The Greatest Investment – Guaranteed

Imagine yourself as a farmer. You have one bag of seeds to produce a crop large enough to feed your family and hopefully have leftovers to sell for profit. You have a limited amount of seeds, so none of it can go to waste.

Would you:

A.) Scatter it on the road for birds to eat?

B.) Plant it in a pile of rocks?

C.) Throw it in some thorn bushes?

D.) Plant it in the best soil you can find.

Sounds like an obvious answer – D – It’s the best option for your investment of seeds and you’d be foolish to do any of the other three choices.

If this story sounds familiar it’s because it was based on the parable Jesus shared in Matthew 13 – The Parable of the Sower. I believe this is one of the greatest lessons in investments that we can find in the Bible.

It’s true that you can reference this story for becoming a better steward with your resources like money, property, materials, etc – but if that’s all you see, you’ve missed the point.

An investment that doesn’t lose value

Jesus shared this story to teach us about a great investment that will never lose value – the message of the Kingdom of God. What we do with this great investment is the key to how well it will perform.

• If we hear about the great investment and don’t take time to understand it, we might as well feed our bag of seeds to the birds.
• If we hear about the great investment and avoid making it a firm foundation in our lives, we might as well plant our bag of seeds in a pile of rocks.
• If we hear about the great investment but rely on earthly investments for our sense of worth and security, we’ve planted our seeds in the thorn bushes.
• The greatest investment ever provided – the message of the Kingdom of God – could yield a return beyond our imagination IF we hear the word of God and understand it. When we understand God’s Word, we know that we’re called to share it (Matthew 28:19-20), and when we share the great investment we’re told that it will produce a crop 30, 60, or 100 times what was sown originally.

The greatest investment you’ll ever make is to share the Word of God with others. I don’t care how much money you have, what your 401(k) did this year, or that you have a series 65 license – no investment will ever trump the message of the Kingdom of God.

I hope this encourages you today to look at the Word of God as a powerful investment that can be used to produce tremendous returns.
