During
the campaign season we were able to draw a dichotomy between ourselves
and the Republican Party. Now we must deliver.
In my last
two blogs "The Perfect Storm" and "The Ides of November" I accurately
predicted the outcome of last Tuesday's elections. The American people
decided to give Democrats a chance to change the course of our great
nation. In my opinion one of the greatest challenges that lie ahead
for the Democratic Party is to move from campaigning to governing. During
the campaign season we were able to draw a dichotomy between ourselves
and the Republican Party. Now we must deliver. A part of delivering
requires Democrats to resist the urge to become retaliatory and punish
Republicans in Congress for the way that they treated us over the past
12 years! The American people did not give us the power back to be punitive.
They elected us to change the direction that America has been heading
in the past 12 years.
Before any
Democrats in Congress engage in open and overt retaliatory tactics against
Republicans in Congress, they should carefully consider the ominous
examples peppered and piled throughout history of what happens when
leaders allow their emotions to lead them down the wrong road. While
I love to make references to the great emperors of the Roman Empire
in my writings, I will resist that urge and use one from World War II.
Adolf Hitler so hated his nemesis Josef Stalin that he wanted to destroy
the city of Stalingrad which was named in honor of Stalin. Against the
advice of his military generals who advised him that his men could not
master the weather conditions and that the Soviets could, Hitler invaded
Stalingrad and this became the bloodiest single battle ever fought with
a combined casualty count of over two million people. The Battle of
Stalingrad was the turning point in World War II and crippled Hitler's
army. Had he not hated his nemesis so much, the outcome may have been
different.
Democrats I
plead with you to not enter into a modern day version of The Battle
of Stalingrad. The people voted you in to lead us back to the American
DREAM! People want affordable healthcare, a healthy economy, a good
education, a prescription drug plan that works, and a host of other
"kitchen table" goods. Democrats, according to a USA Today/Gallup
poll, the American people believe that you can get the job done. Look
at these numbers when the urge to fight the Battle of Stalingrad rises.
"In the poll taken Thursday through Sunday, just after Democrats swept
to majorities in the House and Senate, those surveyed said by nearly
2-to-1 that they want Democrats to have more influence than President
Bush on the direction of the nation. Nearly half said the country will
be better off under Democrats."
Avoid Stalingrad
and change the direction of this country!
