We are pleased to announce that Faithful Democrats (www.faithfuldemocrats.com) will be accepting fellowship applications on a rolling basis for our Faithful Democrats Fellows in 2010.  This highly competitive distinction is given annually to Americans who demonstrate the greatest leadership in our country’s progressive faith community.

Recipients of the fellowship will find that the award entails fellowship in two senses of the word. First, this award brings with it the prestige of being recognized for excellence in leadership in the progressive faith community.  Fellowship recipients are located around the country, and they have a diversity of experiences and come from a variety of backgrounds.  What they all have in common is that they have demonstrated their outstanding talents and have gone above and beyond in the name of the common good.  During their fellowship year, these emerging leaders contribute regular columns to the Faithful Democrats site, where they reflect on the political issues of our day and shape the public discourse at the intersection of religion and politics.  Whether from our nation’s best divinity and public policy schools, as leading public servants in local, state, and federal government, or as directors of non-profits, political advocacy groups, and other community initiatives, they share the passion and compassion that sets them apart as Faithful Democrats Fellows.

Second, recipients of the honor will also find that the fellowship experience is more than an award — it is also a community.  The fellowship program specifically aims to bring together up-and-coming talent to meet with many of the foremost voices in progressive politics.  This is the second definition of fellowship: recipients get to know other emering leaders in their fellowship class who have received this distinction while also having the chance to connect with some of the most prominent figures in the progressive faith community.  By becoming part of a closely knit network of progressive thinkers and activists through exclusive skill-building events, specialized career counseling, and conference calls with distinguished guest speakers, these emerging leaders are offered valuable opportunities unique to the Faithful Democrats Fellowship.  As a result, this community becomes not only a powerful and meaningful asset for personal and professional development for fellowship recipients, it also serves as a source of inspiration for these rising leaders while they take on the challenge of shaping the debate about the public policy, political, and theological issues that face our party and our nation.
