Just a Thought

Before we pull any lever, tap any screen, or punch any card … let's pray.

Many of us will make our ways to polling stations across the nation today. We will enter sacred spaces with drawn curtains and we will make choices that will influence the course of our history.

Before we pull any lever, tap any screen, or punch any card … let's pray.

Al Gore said it best, just before the 2000 election.  He warned the next eight years present some of the greatest challenges our country has ever faced.  Who you elect will matter.  He couldn't have been more prescient.

Who we elect in the primary will matter, just as our choice in the general election will matter.  Both choices will shape our capacity for the next four to eight years.

The issues facing us are grave:

  • Global warming and Environmental Injustice
  • The Israel / Palestine Conflict
  • Deep Instability in the Middle-east with nuclear capacity at play
  • Challenges in multiple regions of the world (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kenya, Chad, and Sudan, not to mention Mexico and Colombia)
  • The greatest economic rift between rich and poor in recent domestic memory — exacerbated by the lack of healthcare for millions of Americans.
  • The loss of jobs and the challenging affects of globalization and unregulated international business practices.
  • The need for our country to love its neighbors while ensuring the welfare of its citizens through responsible and gracious immigration policy.

So, let's covenant together to pray.

Many of us have made up minds, others are undecided. What could it hurt to lay our choice before God one last time and ask for guidance before pulling the lever, tapping the screen or punching that card.

I know I'll be there… eyes closed… waiting… listening for guidance…
