About that Supreme Court Same-sex marriage silliness…. Last week I came across something I had never encountered before. It has fascinated me ever since. Ants. Not ants, per se. I have, in fact, seen those once or twice in my lifetime. It wasn’t the ants themselves, but the silliness of where I found them that befuddled me. I’ve know animals to do some strange things. I know of someone who once found a snake coiled up around her computer cables. Nice. I... Read more

It’s hard for me to delegate because it’s hard for me to let go. As a parent, it’s easier for me to just do something than to give my kids a shot at it. As a leader, it’s more comfortable for me to hold on to a task I know I can do well, than to delegate it to someone else. Come to think of it, learning to delegate effectively is a walk of faith. [ See my post The Secret... Read more

Most of us cringe somewhere deep within when we hear the word — test. School taught us that tests are events to be feared. Red pens. Snickers from our classmates. Numbers not up to expectations. For far too many of us, tests are pre-cursers to failure. And that’s a shame, because the only way for our faith to grow is for it to pass the test. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know... Read more

I guess I expected the latest DreamWorks animated film The Croods to be, well, crude. Hitting the theaters Friday, March, 22, 2013, written and directed by  Kirk DiMicco and Chris Sanders, The Croods, the latest addition to the DreamWorks animated vault, surprised me in a few ways. Given DreamWorks marketplace niche of funny, endearing, but slightly irreverent films and this film’s name, I thought this one might have me recoiling on occasion or wishing I could have hit the mute button... Read more

Congratulations! You made it! You’re the new leader. Now what? I know you’re supposed to always look like you know what you’re doing but — truth be told — new leaders often don’t even know where to start. They drift around for a month or so, smiling a lot, ordering new stationery while they act as if they’ve got it covered. I came across this all-too-familiar scenario recently while coaching a young executive at a non-profit. He had been moved... Read more

A recent airplane flight reminded me that there are times in life when all you can do is trust. They happen much more than we might think, these life moments that require faith from us. My reminder came with a brief airplane ride, one of those where it takes you longer to drive to the airport than it does to fly to your destination. Because the flight was short, the plane was small. Kind of like a can turned sideways... Read more

Failure. You are planning to experience it again aren’t you? Some years ago I added this line to my life mission statement: “Embrace failure as the only path to success.” [ Tweet this! ] I’ve had to remind myself of it far too often of late. How to Bounce Back A recent failure reminded me of a family scene from a few years ago. We were vacationing in sunny Charleston, SC. It was our kids’ first experience with ocean surf.... Read more

It shouldn’t be that hard to do, should it? To talk to your kids? To carry on a conversation with a 5, 7, or 12-year-old? You’d think we wouldn’t have to give it too much attention to make it happen. After all, we drive and talk all the time. You can multi-task when trying to talk to your kids can’t you? Well, sometimes. Maybe. But we’re not likely not have much success, and certainly not much intentional growth. [ 5 Steps to... Read more

I’ve never heard anyone say they accidentally became a more faithful follower of Jesus Christ. I’ve heard many say they wish they could be. I’ve heard the sound of disillusionment in their voices, as if they’ve resigned themselves to not being among the chosen ones wise enough to decipher the secret code to more intentional living by faith. But living by faith simply means that you act, speak, and think based on what you believe to be true — not... Read more

I’m always eager to introduce opinions from people who know more than I do about a topic, such as the selection of the new Pope, Francis I. Privileged to feature a guest post from P. Andrew Sandlin, President of The Center for Cultural Leadership.  He founded CCL in 2001 with the conviction that only eminently equipped cultural leaders will actually create a new Christian culture — and that only transformed Christians can transform the present anti-Christian culture of the West. Follow his... Read more
