What the klieg lights give, the klieg lights take away. Such is the double-edged sword of media coverage. My Catholic friends would do well to remember it in the rush of media coverage over choosing a new pope. The 24/7 coverage of papal smoke signals all seems like a twisted dream sequence of American Idol — just in Rome — and without the horiffic singing. Call it The Search for the Next Italian Idol. (No offense intended to my Catholic friends,... Read more

Why? For many Christians, it’s the question we should never ask. We tend to think we should just shut up and do what God tells us. He is, after all, a consuming fire. We know the whole story of when the earth opened to swallow those who dared to ask too many questions. So we keep our mouths shut, thinking it’s never OK to raise our hands and ask God the ultimate question — why? There’s some truth to that thought. God is... Read more

Ever feel like you’ve been beating your head against a brick wall? Are you frustrated with where life has left you? You don’t have to settle for that feeling. You can end your frustration and find a new direction. It’s easier than you might think. Take it from someone who knew about frustration – Helen Keller. Helen lost her sight and hearing before she could talk. Her early childhood was filled with extreme anger and frustration as she failed to... Read more

My back hurts. Sometimes. It’s part of the price I pay for being taller than most people, I suppose. I’ve learned to to live with it. Regular stretching, good posture habits, and frequent strengthening excercises keep me limber enough to keep moving forward. But it is what it is — a weakness. I’ve noticed something. My back hurts most when I try to hide my weakness. The thing about my back pain is that it often comes from staying in the same... Read more

The Biblical book of Exodus may not be the first place you’d think to find wisdom for harnessing modern technology, but I think Rand Paul’s filibuster over drone use finds some support there. This week, Senator Rand Paul (KY-R) initiated a talking filibuster — a rare event in these days of virtual filibusters — to protest what he sees as the Obama Administration’s lack of a transparent policy regarding when drones may be used to kill American citizens without due process... Read more

It can be tough to figure out the secret to living by faith when we’re busy being angry at Him. Trust me. I’ve had a little experience on that point. Yesterday’s post [You Don’t Need All the Answers to Stop Being Angry at God] began to explore this dilemma with a look at the Israelites predicament in Exodus 14. Like them, we struggle to discover the secret to living by faith when we’re freaking out about God dumping us in the wilderness.... Read more

Maybe Dale Carnegie had it mixed up when he published his classic work How to Win Friends and Influence People. Maybe he should have written one that would be much easier for most of us to achieve — How to Make Enemies and Offend People.  I think Jesus might have qualified to write the forward for that one, actually. But you and I can do this pretty effectively ourselves by what we say. Unfortunately, we can even do it when we don’t... Read more

I’m a big fan of guns. Anyone who follows along here regularly at FaithWalkers knows that. I think guns play a vital role in securing our liberty to worship God freely in the United States. But I’m a fan of laws, as well. And I think that guns can do a lot of harm when used improperly. So I see both the value of laws to provide boundaries on our freedoms to own guns, and I see the value of owning guns to protect those freedoms.... Read more

At a recent Bible study I attended, one man shared that he really struggled to get focused on God on Saturday mornings when his family schedule is so different that day. As a father of six, I could relate to that. Maybe you can, too. But Saturday isn’t the only day it can be tough. Each and every morning brings its own challenges. As Jesus said, “Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34) So how can you quickly and easily... Read more
