The Power of Self-Love: Oscar Wilde’s Enduring Wisdom

The Power of Self-Love: Oscar Wilde’s Enduring Wisdom September 8, 2023

Oscar Wilde, the celebrated poet and playwright, once said, “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.” There is a profound truth in Wilde’s quote and it is significant in our lives.

Self-love forms the foundation for growth, happiness, and healthy relationships. Before we can ever love another person well, we must love ourselves. It is even the core of a key Scripture in the Bible, “Love others as you love yourself.

It is the art of accepting, appreciating, and showing compassion towards ourselves. Being kind to ourselves. Think about the things we say to ourselves at time. Would we ever say that to someone else?  Would you would ever say that to your 6-year-old self? We must cherish ourselves and prioritize our own well-being.

Self-love calls us to recognize our inherent worth and embrace our perfect imperfections. It is through this lens that we truly come to understand and appreciate our uniqueness. There is no one like you. Every turn in life, every step of growth is just you blossoming. Every step of deconstruction is realizing the freedom and life we have in just being ourselves.

As we embrace self-love, we embark on a journey of empowerment and authenticity. It empowers us to embrace our true divine, beloved nature, live in that freedom, and pursue a life that resonates deeply with our passions and purpose. By living authentically, we unlock happiness and a rich tapestry of experiences.

When others have not been so loving to us, self-love provides a balm for the wounds we carry. Through self-compassion and self-care, we tend to the scars of past hurts and traumas. We nurture our emotional well-being, cultivating resilience that empowers us to move forward, and live authentically with grace and strength.

Embracing ourselves enables us to truly savor life’s beauty and celebrate every step of our journey. It fosters kindness and gratitude, allows us to find joy in the moment and appreciate the intricate tapestry of our life. It nourishes our souls, and brings out a radiant joy that emanates from within.

Oscar Wilde’s quote reminds us of the transformative power of self-love. Part of our mission statement at FreedHearts is: “Freeing Hearts to Love and Be Loved.”  It is what you deserve. Why?  Because you are beloved, as you are for who you are.

Maybe find a mirror, seriously, find a mirror, smile at yourself and say, “Daaaaammn… I am all good. I am loved. I am lovable. I am beloved. I deserve to love and be loved – as I am, for who I am. And I won’t settle for anything less.”

Begin that life-long romance with yourself.
