Why “The Economy is a Moral Issue” Made Me Jump Off the Couch

Last night, during the first presidential debate, Gov. Romney had a line that almost made me jump off the couch.  Speaking of the deficit, he said:

“I think it’s not just an economic issue, I think it’s a moral issue.”

The reason why this was so special to me, as my friend pointed out to me in an e-mail this morning, was because we’ve been hammering away at that idea for some time.  In fact, many of you were at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans two years ago, when we branded the conference with our piggy banks!  Evangelicals for Mitt even bought an ad in the conference’s little magazine, which was featured in the New York Times and FoxNews:

I seriously doubt that Gov. Romney, in his debate prep, said, “Hey, remember those pig signs?”  In fact, I’m not sure he ever saw them!  But, for those of you who were in New Orleans passing out Romney piggy banks when other candidates seemed to have the edge, this is a great moment.  Or, it’s even better, for those who were in Memphis with us in 2006 at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference saying, “No, not Matt, Mitt!  He’s a Yankee, but he has southern values.”

Anyway, I don’t know how this Presidential race will play out, but I’m enjoying every second between now and then.
