The Presbyterian Church (USA)’s long and boring shuffle out of Christendom

The Presbyterian Church (USA) is the Radio Shack of church denominations. It’s been in free fall for so long that it’s sometimes difficult to believe the church is still around. It makes news only when it makes bad news.

Some texts of the Old Testament are used to condemn homosexuality. Taken literally and out of context, Biblical passages can be used to justify slavery, prohibit the wearing of red dresses, and eating of shrimp and shellfish, and to reinforce the inferiority of women.

Wait, are you quoting this to say this is not true? Are you actually denying that the Old Testament can be very easily interpreted to promote slavery and the subjugation of women?

I doubt you’ll get a reply. This column has just become a space where David French can cut and paste articles that he originally posted on the National Review. The opinions of those who disagree with him are of little concern to David, and he never really tries to convince anyone that his own stances are reasonable or correct. An exchange of ideas is not his goal. To be honest, I don’t know why he posts on patheos anymore. His columns mostly amount to angry grumblings about a world that refuses to comply with his point of view.

Perhaps the Presbys should take a moment to thoughtfully review (and reconsider) 2 Peter 2:2 and onward:

2 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

—Satan is the MASTER of using false teachings!!

Verse 2 is particularly interesting! 🙂

  • So why are you here reading them?

Great article and I could not agree more. Unfortunately, it is not only the Presbyterian Church that is becoming spiritually liberal but other denominations as well.

Back in the day, one could go into any Pentecostal church and be assured that the Word of God would be preached without any watering down of the content. Sin was still called sin and wrong was still wrong. Today the great Pentecostal denominations are little more than what the Presbyterian Church was only 20 years ago. Little wonder that the church is in decline.

Perhaps the idea isn’t so much to convince as it is to make people think a bit. My personal opinion of you and those who replied to your post is that you are angry that someone has written something that goes against your liberal views.

How do David French’s opinions qualify as religious news?
