Now that we will be doing movie reviews on Geek Goes Rogue, I want to tell you our movie review policy.
First, I’m not going to make any claims to be an “objective reviewer”. I make no pretense on being a movie snob, art critic or any other label my colleagues might seem to embrace. You’ll get my honest opinion. I won’t hold back. But I’m not going to pretend to be one of those people who view critiquing movies as another way to express themselves in writing. I have my novels for that. You want movie reviews to help you decide on whether to see a movie or not. I’m going to try to point out things that might make the movie worth seeing. If there is nothing in the movie worth seeing, I’ll tell you that too.
Second, I’ll also be looking for interesting themes from a faith perspective. After all, Patheos is an Inter-Faith website. We try to be as faithful to that mission as possible. I’ll seek to point out faith elements in the movies I see. Or non-faith, as the case may be….
Third, and this goes along with number one, I may just flat geek out about a movie. You should be ready for that. After all, our blog is called Geek Goes Rogue. Being a geek means that we are passionate about the things we love. We recognize there is no such things a “true objectivity” except from the perspective of God. We all have feelings. We have thoughts. Those who try to hide them come off as disingenuous at best, liars at worst. At Geek Goes Rouge, we will try not to lie.
So, that’s about it. Stay tuned for movie reviews, starting with Despicable Me, July 3!
