Ruby Jane

Ruby Jane

My daughter teaches an online Latin class to homeschoolers. She just sent me this link to one of her students, 15-year-old Ruby Jane Smith. It turns out, she is yet another of these prodigious Christian homeschoolers who are doing amazing things! Ruby Jane is a fiddle player who has been on the Grand Ole Opry twice, has just been featured at the SXSW showcase in Austin, and has been collecting accolades like these:

“Ruby Jane is the next big news in country music”-Bob Schieffer, CBS Evening News

“(Ruby Jane’s) the young chanteuse with the mega-watt grin”-Carmen Sisson, The Science
Christian Monitor

“Ruby Jane is a natural-born fiddler with a great future ahead of her.”- Jimbo Mathus

“She can melt a rock.” Marty Stuart

“Enormously talented… Best bow arm I have EVER seen.”- Jesse McReynolds

“A bluegrass legend in the making.”- Johnnie Stringer

“Unbelievable 10-year-old musical prodigy and nonstop performer”- Jim Brock

“Phenomenal talent”- Rhonda Vincent

“Not only is she one of the finest musicians around but a real darling.”- Carl Jackson

Named “ARTIST TO WATCH”- Jackson Free Press, 2005

Here she is sitting in with Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel [NOTE: I embedded the video, but it isn’t showing up at least on some browsers. Click to see the “comments” and the video does come up. It’s worth seeing and listening to, especially when Ruby Jane takes her solo]:
