“Now He Is Very Near”: Luther on the Ascension

“Now He Is Very Near”: Luther on the Ascension May 11, 2018

More on the Ascension of Christ. . . .I keep reading on evangelical sites that with His Ascension, Jesus says goodbye, that He left at the most inopportune time, that the disciples now must carry on after Jesus is gone, that Jesus isnโ€™t with us anymore until He returns.ย  Such laments about the absence of Jesus completely miss the point about the true meaning of His Ascension.

As an antidote to these misunderstandings and to further celebrate Ascension Day and Ascension Sunday, I urge you to read this sermon by Martin Luther.

From โ€œA sermon by Dr. Martin Luther on the last chapter of St. Mark. While the eleven were sitting atย meatย Christย manifested himself and reproved them for theirย unbeliefย and hardness ofย heart, 1523.โ€ย ย German text: Erlangen Edition, 12:169; Walch Edition, 11:1256; St. Louis Walch, 11:931.ย  Via Godrules.net

24.ย We must, therefore, conceive of his ascension and Lordship as something active, energetic and continuous, and must notย imagineย that he sits above while we hold the reins ofย governmentย down here. Nay, he ascended up thither for the reason that there he canย bestย do hisย workย andย exercisedominion. Had he remained uponย earthย in visible form, before the people, he could not haveย wroughtย so effectually, for all the people could not have been with him and heard him. Therefore, he inaugurated an expedient which made it possible for him to be in touch with all andย reignย in all, toย preachย to all and be heard by all, and to be with all. Therefore,ย bewareย lest youย imagineย within yourself that he has gone, and now is,ย farย away from us. The very opposite is true: While he was onย earth, he wasย farย away from us; now he is very near. . . .

26.ย In the first place,ย Psalm 8:4-6ย says ofย Christ: โ€œWhat is man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him but little lower thanย God, and crownest him withย gloryย andย honor. Thou makest him to haveย dominionย over the works of thyย hands; thou hast put all things under hisย feet.โ€ Here theย prophetย speaks toย Godย concerning a man andย marvelsย thatย Godย humbled, for a time, that man, when heย sufferedย him toย die, humbled him to the extent that it seemed as ifย Godย were not with him. But after a little whileย Godย exalted him, so that all things must obey him, both inย heavenย and onย earth. To these words we must hold, to these words we must cling, in these words we must believe; for reason will not submit nor adapt itself to them, but says they areย lies. Now, if all things are to be subject to this being and to fall at hisย feet, he must sit where he can look into the wholeย world, intoย heavenย andย hellย and everyย heart; where he can see allย sinย and allย righteousness, and can not only see all things, But can rule accordingly.

27.ย Hence, these areย majesticย andย powerfulย words. They afford theย heartย greatย comfort, so that they who believe this are filled withย joyย andย courageย and defiantly say: Myย LordJesusChristย isย Lordย overย death,ย Satan,ย sin,ย righteousness, body,ย life, foes andย friends. What shall Iย fear? For while myย enemiesย stand before my veryย doorand plan toย slayย me, myย faithย reasons thus:ย Christย is ascended intoย heavenย and becomeย Lordย over all creatures, hence myย enemies, too, must be subject to him and thus it is not in theirย powerย to do me harm. I challenge them to raise aย fingerย against me or toย injureย aย hairย of my head against the will of myย LordJesusChrist. Whenย faithย grasps and stands upon this article, it stands firm and waxesย boldย and defiant, so as even to say: If myย Lordย so wills that they, mineย enemies,ย slayย me,ย blessedย am I; I gladly depart. Thus you will see that he is ascended intoย heaven, not to remain in indifference, but toย exercisedominion; and all for our good, to afford usย comfortย andย joy. . . .

30.ย Again in still another Psalm,ย Davidย says (ย Psalm 68:18): โ€œThou hast ascended on high, thou hast led away captives; thou hast receivedย giftsย among men, yea among the rebellious also, thatย JehovahGodย might dwell with them.โ€ And all theย prophetsย took great pains to describe Christโ€™s ascension and hisย kingdom. For, as his sufferings andย deathย are deeply founded in the Scriptures, so are also hisย kingdom, his resurrection and ascension. In this manner we must view the ascension ofย Christ. Otherwise it will afford us neitherย pleasureย norย profit. For what good will it do you if you merelyย preachย that he ascended up toย heavenย and sits there with foldedย hands? This is what theย prophetย would say in the Psalmย Christย is ascended on high and has ledย captivityย captive. That is to say, not only does he sit up there but he is also down here. And for this purpose did he ascend up thither, that he might be down here, that he might fill all things and be everywhere present; which thing he could not do had he remained onย earth, for here in the body he could not have been present with all. He ascended toย heaven, where allย heartsย can see him, where he can deal with all men, that he might fill allย creation. He is present everywhere and all things are filled with his fullness. Nothing is so great, be it inย heavenย or onย earth, but he hasย powerย over it, and it must be inย perfectย obedience to him. He not only governs and fills allย creationย (that would not help myย faithย any nor take away myย sins), but also has ledย captivityย captive. . . .

32.ย From thisย captivityย no one can free himself,ย saveย only that one manย Christ. What did he do? He madeย sin,ย death, andย Satanย hisย debtors.ย Sinย fell upon him as though it would vanquish him, but it lost the day; heย devouredsin. Andย Satan,ย death, andย hellย fared the same way. But we are unable to do this unless he be present to aid us. Alone, we must needsย perish, But he, since he had done noย sinย and was full ofย righteousness, trod underย footSatan,ย deathย andย hell, andย devouredย them, and took everything captive that fain would capture us, so thatย sinย andย deathย no longer can do harm.

33.ย This, then, is theย powerย he causes to beย preached, that all who believe in him areย releasedย fromย captivity. I believe in him by whomย sin,ย death, and all things thatย afflictย us, were led captive. It is a pleasingย discourse, and full ofย comfort, when we are told thatย deathย is taken away and slain, so that it is no longer felt. However, it affordsย pleasureย andย comfortย only to those who believe it. You will not findย releaseย fromย captivityย in your works, fastings, prayers, castigations, tonsures, and gowns, and whatever more things you may do; but only in the place whereย Christย sits, whither he ascended and whither he ledย captivityย with him. Hence, he who would be freed fromย sinย andย deliveredย fromย Satanย andย death, must come thither whereย Christย is. Now, where is he? He is here with us, and for this purpose did he sit down inย heaven, that he might be near unto us. Thus, we are with him up there and he is with us down here. Through the word he comes down and throughย faithย we ascend up.
