It’s Lent, traditionally a time to fast (or diet), give things up (like social media), take on things (like exercise), practice devotional disciplines (or read a devotional book or heavy-duty theology), or other salutary practices (like repenting).
Being under the Gospel instead of the Law, we don’t have to do anything like that, though we also have the liberty to enjoy the Friday fish fries at the local Catholic church.
I always appreciate the disciplines of Lent. They are good for me. I might not be able to keep them up for a whole year or the rest of my life, but I usually can for 40 days, plus Sundays. And the somber fasts build up to the release of Easter, making that feast even more joyful.
