The 58 gender options

The 58 gender options February 17, 2014

  • Facebook will also allow you to choose the pronoun you want to be referred by:  “he,” “she,” or “their.”

Cis,  by the way, refers to personally identifying with the sex you were born with.

So is “male” and “female” not even going to be an option? You’ll have to call yourself as a “Cis male” or “Cis female,” thus buying into the whole ideology?  (If the traditional breakdown is still used, that would give 60 options total.)

I’m wondering what all of these gender identities will do even to the LGBT status quo.  “I was born this way” no longer has any significance.  It’s all about how you “self-identify.”

And the dichotomy between “gay” and “straight,” supposedly such absolutely determined categories, are no longer the only options.  Although I suppose sexual preference has little to do with this understanding of gender preference.  A homosexual male would presumably still identify himself as a male–sorry,  cisgender male–and be attracted to the same.  (I don’t think genderqueer applies here, exactly.)

But I don’t know.  Help me out here.

Anyway, you may need to update your Facebook status.
