Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel: “This is what the Lord commands: When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.” -Numbers 30:1-2
One thing God makes clear–we are held accountable for our words. He calls us to say what we do and do what we say. Some say talk is cheap, but God considers our words valuable.
When a person made a vow in Old Testament times, they were obligated by law to fulfill it. Perhaps this is why Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes that our words should be few. The more words, the more struggle to do what we say we will do.
Today, maybe our focus should be to speak less and with more meaning. Make every word count. Do what you say you are going to do. When this becomes what we are known for, we will find the respect of others as well as the applause of God.
