“This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses at the time the Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai.” -Numbers 3:1
Ancestry.com has launched a new revolution in family history research. Rather than traveling to cemeteries or libraries to find details on a lost lineage, online users can search an unbelievable database of names and dates (for a fee, of course.). Many invest hours per week to track down photos, census records, and other facts in their pursuit of knowing their roots.
In Numbers 3, we see this fascinating and longing for knowing our roots has a long history. The family of Moses and Aaron is recorded in great detail to confirm their past. They were Levites, descendants from one of the 12 sons of Jacob, the grandson of Abraham who is seen as the beginning of the Jewish nation. The Levites were the priestly tribe, the ones who served God at the tabernacle, who handled the ark of the covenant, and taught the law of the Lord.
The family of Moses and Aaron was no small matter; neither is yours. Regardless of how you feel about your family, your family history matters. As you discover your past, you find how who you are today has been shaped, offering a sense of identity that can empower you now and in the days ahead. Looking back allows us to discover God’s fingerprints in our lives and how he has designed us to live for him.
