The Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. -Numbers 21:34
Numbers 21 is a violent chapter. The Israelites completely wiped out two different groups, leaving no survivors. This time of war was one that could have caused much fear among Moses and his people. They were not a trained army and lacked the tools of their warring neighbors. But God said, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land.”
As much as we would like to say the Bible teaches passivism, it is clear there have been times for war. Even King Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 3 there was a time for war and a time for peace. War is not desirable, but is sometimes necessary in this world. When it happened between Israel and its neighbors, God provided a promise of victory. The result was that they were not to fear.
What Moses and his people experienced in the wilderness from the voice of God applies still to us today. God calls us to live without fear. He is bigger than our problems and any enemy we may face. We need not run from today’s battles, but run to the One who can deliver us during our times of need.
