Genesis 4: The Beginning of Family

Genesis 4: The Beginning of Family 2012-01-05T11:27:33-05:00

1 Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. -Genesis 4:1-2

God’s order was man, woman, marriage, and now children. The pain of childbearing was included as part of the curse; the joy of having children is a blessing of God.

Unfortunately, the first family’s children did not begin well. Cain killed his brother Abel and was banished from the area by God. It was a later son, named Seth, who would become the child of promise, the line from whom Noah and later Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation, would come.

In every family, there is both turmoil and blessing. Genesis is honest enough to reveal both. Despite its flaws, family remains God’s plan for the continuation of society, a plan we would do well to honor in our own families today.
