The following video is our congregation’s communion observance (10.11.20).  My actual notes follow the video.  However, with the state of Michigan this week, I felt led to offer some consoling remarks and a call to prayer and unity.  Part of those remarks are in the section Partial transcription of communion.  I have also added a couple of official statements that I found and shared on social networks in Related | Tragedy averted in Michigan. Honestly, I’m grieved that political agendas... Read more

I culled down this article from a reaction paper.  We were given this open statement to support or disagree with.  “The doctrine of the ‘epiklesis’ in the Eastern Rite provides a more adequate place for the work of the Holy Spirit in worship than was found in the Western Rite.”[1] This is a communion topic.  However, the topic narrows to the epiklesis, which also narrows again into historical views of transubstantiation.  Although my research is more extensive, this article offers glimpses... Read more

We welcome our General Superintendent, Doug Shoemaker.  He is retiring at the end of the year as the leader of Indiana Yearly Meeting (IYM).  He is going to be returning to his first congregation as Pastor.  Historically, we have had some Pastors from Long Lake Friends Church (LLFC) who have come and gone, and then come back again to Pastor for a second term.  So it’s wonderful for Superintendent Doug that he is able to go back to his first... Read more

This Sunday, our congregation celebrated our 140th Anniversary.  Since this is quite a feat in our day and age, I’ve decided to do a brief series on the highlights.  This piece shares some greetings from former Pastors. Although I’ll probably post the video presentation, but if you would like to read a brief Snapshot of our Heritage CLICK HERE Please check back in for more of our history and the events of the day, including a sermon from Rev. 140th Anniversary Snapshot of Our Heritage Long Lake Friends Church prepared by Pastor Jared September 27, 2020, 10 am Our History Long Lake Friends Church (LLFC) was started by Friends (Quakers) from Randolph County, Indiana, who moved to Grand Traverse County in the late 1870’s as loggers.  Paul Collins, our Presiding Clerk, is a descendant of one of these families. Another family of loggers moved here in 1883.  The Penningtons were from Amo, IN.  They had 10 children, and their... Read more

FREE sermon notes CLICK HERE There are some unique aspects of this particular sermon.  The first is obvious.  It is not a slide show, but a “live action” sermon.  I discuss that more in the Mevo section below. The second is that this is a part of Romans that I consider to... Read more

Irenaeus may not offer a theology of re-calling but there is a mystery in the communion, an “invocation of God,” that changes either its meaning or our reception of it. “Which was the more developed position on the role of the elements in conveying the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, Justin Martyr or Irenaeus?”[1] There are a couple of considerations for this question.  First of all, Irenaeus of Lyons is the student of Justin Martyr so it is possible that... Read more

To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. sermon snippet | Peace is not the absence of turmoil Peace is not an absence of turmoil, conflict, or difficulty.  We often think that when the conflict finally ends, we’ll have peace.  That idea of peace is definitely not Biblical.  We are not simply waiting for the storm to end. Which was the more developed position on the role of the elements in conveying the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, Justin Martyr or Irenaeus? [1] There are a couple of considerations for this question.  First of all, Irenaeus of Lyons is the student of Justin Martyr so it is possible that the thoughts of Irenaeus are simply a natural development of Justin’s work. Secondly, while one can argue that Irenaeus writes more, and perhaps writes more articulately, Justin bears a great... Read more
