“Greg Hunt’s Death Sentence: A Flawed Capital Murder Case”
“Never trust the government.” It seems so obvious. So, why do so many blindly trust our criminal justice system? It’s so dangerous. Now, someone is about to die because of it.
In a fit of jealousy, Greg Hunt murdered Karen Lane, after seeing her out with another man. It’s a story that seems common throughout history, murder in the throes of passion. So much so, that the law distinguishes crimes of passion from capital murder. In order to pursue capital murder, there has to be an aggravating factor. In the case of the murder of Karen, the aggravating factor cited was sexual assault.
From the beginning, Greg Hunt never denied what he did. But, he did deny any assertion that he sexually assaulted Karen Lane. For counsel, Greg was appointed former prosecutors and a former judge. This often happens in capital cases. There are so few qualified lawyers to actually try the cases that the trials often become incestuous. Greg had no idea how close his lawyers were to the government. He just listened to their admonitions to “trust the process…”
The prosecutor’s case was in trouble. Though Greg Hunt was originally charged with simple murder, this was not enough to feed the rage that was growing outside. Like many trials, the case was growing more and more political. So, the prosecutor decided to push for Greg to be indicted for capital murder. Using planted stories in the local press, the prosecutor accomplished his task. Eventually, Greg was indicted for capital murder based on the novel idea that Karen Lane was also sexually assaulted. The prosecutor raised the stakes even higher by claiming that Greg abused Karen with a broom that was found lying on the kitchen floor.
Still worried about his case, the prosecutor recruited jail inmates to try to pull information out of Greg Hunt. The inmates would come up to Greg and attempt to ply him with all sorts of things. Each inmate had one objective, to secure evidence that Greg sexually assaulted Karen Lane. Statement after statement that the inmates produced later showed that they were unable to secure what the prosecutor wanted them to. When the court set the trial date, the prosecutor still had no evidence that a sexual assault ever took place. Again, there can be no death penalty without an aggravating circumstance.
“The Truth About the Broomstick and the Lack of Forensic Proof”
Seemingly out of nowhere, the prosecutor started to purport that Karen Lane had been sexually assaulted with a broom. The autopsy report states that a broom was found between Karen’s legs. Then, both the stick and the body were wrapped in a sheet for transport. Before the police arrived, there had been multiple people in the kitchen with Karen’s body before investigators arrived. Needless to say, the broom wasn’t handled properly.
While there was a semen deposit found on the broom, the prosecutor had two problems. First, the DNA could not be directly linked to Greg Hunt. Since Karen Lane was out earlier with another man, that could have been the source, but that source was never tested or pursued. Second, the DNA expert for the prosecutor couldn’t exactly state when the semen was deposited. To say that they were all over the place would be an understatement. One estimation was an hour before death. Another estimation was slightly before death. Yet, another estimation was after death. A semen deposit that took place after death is not sexual abuse. The expert said he found biological evidence on the broomstick. Then, he admitted that the broom was transported with the body and that the biological evidence’s placement on the broom could have come in transport. There was no direct irrefutable biological evidence. Then, the prosecutor called another expert to clean up the mess of the first expert. This expert claimed that they found cervical mucus on the broom. What nobody either knew or admitted at the time, was that Karen did not have a cervix, it was removed in a prior surgery. Even though the prosecutor continued to lie, their case was in trouble. No DNA / No Cervix = No evidence of sexual assault. = No capital murder. Greg’s attorneys did nothing to capitalize on the prosecutor’s consistent mistakes.
“Jailhouse Snitch Produces Incredible Claim”
Then, the prosecutor provided another surprise witness. There was a jailhouse snitch, who had only briefly been in the cell with Greg Hunt, that said he heard him bragging about assaulting Karen Lane with a broomstick. Around the same time, Greg’s lawyers were able to produce multiple statements of inmates at the jail saying they were being pushed to extract information about Greg, some even said that they had just signed whatever the prosecutors gave them so that they could get out. It didn’t matter how many inmate witnesses Greg’s lawyers got disqualified, the state seemed to just keep finding another to say what they needed them to say. Who wouldn’t testify falsely if they were facing years in prison and could get out? The prosecutor kept telling the jury that nobody got a deal. This has repeatedly been proven false, based on those who got out not long after the trial. These magical inmate statements ultimately saved the prosecutor’s case…and got Greg sentenced to death.
“Horrible But Not Capital Murder”
The bottom line is this…Greg Hunt was drunk, high on cocaine and prescription pills and flew into a rage after seeing his girlfriend Karen Lane out with another man and killed her.
This is horrible…but it is not capital murder. Greg Hunt’s actions do not constitute a crime in which a sentence of death is an option.
Greg Hunt’s attorneys failed him. Any competent attorney would have been able to quickly debunk the sexual assault claims.
“This is an Injustice”
Once you are convicted of a capital crime and sentenced to death, you go through your first round of appeals. Then, you are on your own. There is no law library on death row. There is no money to hire an investigator. Procedural rules make filing any new claims impossible. Everything is slighted toward a system that is designed to prevent injustices from being challenged. There is no such thing as due process in capital cases. Greg Hunt was not tried fairly, he was not given a fair shot at his appeals and the state has all the power to manipulate the system any way that they want.
Greg Hunt murdered Karen Lane…but he did not sexually assault her…and therefore should not be scheduled to be executed on June 10.
