While language can only take us so far…there are times in which our current language is not taking us far enough and other words can take us further. Tonight, I want us to explore that it would look like to shift our language concerning God. I believe that the word “it” points further into the distance of possibility and imagination than the word “God” is capable. Certainly time manipulates language and our time is one in which God language has lost a tremendous amount of positive meaning. I know that the word “God” is very hurtful to many of you. For me, “IT” is able to describe the unlimited indescribable possibilities of divinity in a way that “God” cannot. The question of our hour thus shifts from “What is God?” to “What is IT?” Come let us dream…

In the beginning was IT. IT was with God. IT was God. What is IT? IT is mystery beyond. IT is magic beyond magic. IT is imagination beyond imagination. IT is love beyond love. IT is divinity beyond divinity. What is IT? IT is. The isity of IT is the divinity of IT. In the is of IT is the was, the is and the eternal will be. I believe in IT because there is an is that has been with me. IT found me. IT called me. IT pushes me. IT is with me. IT found is tonight. IT calls us. IT pushes us. IT is with us. IT is.

How often have you asked the question: “What is it?” Is this not a divine question? By asking the name of it are we not recognizing the divinity of IT? Do we not believe in an IT that is everywhere and in everything? IT is here. IT is there. IT is everywhere. One of great tragedies of Christianity is the murder of divinity everywhere. Through systemization and institutionalization, IT was murdered somewhere along the way. While the concept died…IT lives.

Churches can’t contain IT. That’s why we’re not there. IT is here.

Amen.
