I will admit that environmental issues have never been one of the driving forces of my ministry and spiritual activism.  While I have a deep respect for those who fight for the environment, there are just a plethora of other issues that have drawn my attention over the past decade.  Tonight was different.   I live in Denton, Texas.  Denton is a beautiful city with a real community feel to it.  I have noticed lately the large drills that... Read more

In our journey through the Gospel of John, we find ourselves today experiencing Good Friday in November.  When I consider that we will also commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance this week, it doesn’t seem all that out of the ordinary.  For what we are talking about today is a crime of hate that was predicated on a hatred for queerness.  The events that led to the passion of the Christ has occurred and continues to occur over and over... Read more

In 1993, a jury in Harris County convicted Jamie Bruce McCoskey of kidnap and murder of Michael Keith Dwyer.  In addition to these crimes, McCoskey was also accused of raping Dwyer’s fiancé.  The sentence was death and that sentence is to be carried out in Huntsville, Texas today November 12 at 6pm.  I don’t know Jamie Bruce McCoskey.  I only know the convictions and evidence that everyone else knows, but I do know God and I know that you... Read more

We begin this morning with Jesus immersed deep in thought.  There is a crime of hate coming, but wasn’t it always.  Jesus was simply too queer for a world that demanded neat identities and boundaries.   This morning there are many of us who feel similarly.  We know that to challenge the acceptable identities and boundaries that we are placed in is to open our selves up to crimes of hate.  We have all experienced the vulnerability that Jesus is... Read more

In the Christian creation myth, God creates humanity.  Upon creation, God invites humanity to go and name their world.  In the midst of the naming story, it becomes obvious that God educated and guided humanity on what to do.  Throughout time, it has been the human responsibility to continue to educate and guide younger generations in the task of naming creation.   The question is…are we continuing in the task of educating and guiding our children in equipping them to... Read more

What do you believe God is?  I think most people think about God as a being.  Some might even think of God as a human.  I think there are even those who think that God has a penis…those who constantly refer to God as he.  Regardless, this morning we find ourselves thinking about Jesus as the electricity of life and God as the source.   What does it look like to think of God as less being and more... Read more

Let us not delay in stating the obvious.  We are meeting this morning in my house.  We find ourselves in this space after many conversations about the need to find a new space to meet on Sunday mornings.  Though our parting with Mable Peabody’s was quite amicable, we are still meeting this morning at a critical juncture.   This morning we are able to feel the power of Peter’s words to Jesus at the end of the 13th... Read more

Excited to announce the release of The Queer, a colloquial interpretation of the Gospel of John. “When God embodies those we marginalize, strange things happen. Peace, hope and love manifest in unimaginable ways. This is the tale of the Queer.” This text is used in worship every Sunday morning at The Church at Mable Peabody’s.     In the thirteenth chapter of John, the closer Jesus gets to the inevitable moment of execution, the more we discover hate bubbling below and above the surface.  In these hours, Jesus teaches us many things.  We learn that to respond to hate with anything less than love is to live as something less than God.  Jesus was prepared to love those who hated Jesus until the very end and beyond.   Judas was getting ready to betray Jesus... Read more
