I posed a question to a group of people the other day, “Has God ever had an orgasm?” Everybody gets excited when you start talking about orgasms. The replies were wildly diverse. Slowly, a common theme emerged. I found that almost everyone believed there was a stark separation between God and sex. For most, it was almost as if God created sex to tempt us to be dirty. One man even went so far as to push that sex was a result of sin and wasn’t created by God at all. I quickly realized why he was the most ornery person in the room. Regardless, these answers made me realize that most people have a fundamental misunderstanding of a core part of who God is.

God is a sexual being. How can one be so sure? We are created in the very image of God and our sexuality is a core component of who we are. How can we be created in the image of God and God not be a sexual being? When we engage in sexual activity, I believe we are emulating the very creative process that God engages in. Whether we are aiming to create new life or simply seeking to make love, sex is a profoundly creative process that is unique each time despite commonalities. If God is not a sexual being, then sexuality is a key component of who we are that is not made in the image of God and therefore unredeemable. I simply cannot believe such nonsense.

Orgasms are spaces of profound pleasure linked to a moment of physical and spiritual creation. We are the great orgasms of God. In creating us, God is constantly feeling the pleasure of physical and spiritual creation. This is why I don’t believe that masturbation is a sin. In and of God’s singular person, God is engaging the process of pleasurable creation. Masturbation and sex are emulations of God. Possessing all possible orientations and genders, God engages the entire spectrum of sexual and creative processes. The bigness and wideness of the love of God’s love is immeasurable. When I look around at all of creation, I am in awe of the production of God. Thanks be to the God in whose many orgasms we live and have our being.

Amen.
