Hauerwas on California

In his memoir (Hannah’s Child: A Theologian’s Memoir) somewhere, Hauerwas says he “doesn’t believe in California.” Only someone from Texas and who lives in North Carolina could utter such a claim.

But anyone who lives in Chicago, as I do, during the winter, which we now have upon us, and who flies during that winter to San Diego, quickly becomes a believer.

I’m a believer. In California. Especially San Diego.
