Sepphoris

Sepphoris

Just north of Nazareth, a tad west, is Sepphoris, the Roman city that governed northern Galilee when Jesus was growing up. Tradition has it that Mary was born here. Many scholars think Jesus (and others from Nazareth) would have been employed to build the many buildings in Sepphoris. Others seem categorically to deny that he would have worked there, but how anyone knows for certain is beyond me. One question helps: Was there sufficient work in Nazareth to employ a “carpenter” or (better yet) “artisan,” which is what the Gospels tell us Jesus was. Did he supplement normal farming with artisan work? I’m of the view that Sepphoris is a good possiblity for some of Jesus’ employment. Anyway, here are some pictures from this marvelous Roman-shaped city:

Got to have an amphitheater, a wide road through the city, a mosaic, and a look back to Nazareth from Sepphoris.
