Yet More on Gun Laws

Yet More on Gun Laws July 24, 2012

Here is a chart of assault deaths in the USA, by Kieran Healy:

Instead of saying derogatory things about the South, look at the second graph — how we stack up against the rest of the world! America is the most violent country in the world — Do Christians want to change that national story?

  • Correction: “assault” in the graph is not referring to “gun deaths” per Healy’s site. “Note that “assault” as a cause of death does not distinguish the mechanism of death (gunshot, stabbing, etc).”

He also says all assaults, not just homicides, are included.

I think this distinctions are important in understanding the topic at hand… and that your larger question is also of great importance. How do we change a culture of violent behavior? In addition, domestic violence is one of the largest killers of women…

The BBC show “Traffik” made a case against the war on drugs, with a speech at the end about how you can go after the supply all day but for every supplier you shut down a new one will spring up to take its place; to truly solve the problem you have to get at the demand more than the supply. It seems to me there are many voices indicting the “war on drugs” as worse than useless but I wonder how the US would avoid a similar “war on guns”?

Possessing a firearm is illegal in the warzone previously known as Mexico. Murderers get them illegally everyday and sometimes from the US state.

Gun laws are very restrictive in Chicago, they are daily setting murder records. Go figure.

Men’s hearts are where the Christian message might change society, not through this secular state which is hostile to Christ. Prayer makes way more logic, IMO.

  • Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know.

The love of violence in our culture saddens me. Why is the writer/rapper of the song ‘Kill You’ the best selling artist of the 2000’s? Why is ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ so popular? Why do so many people love the slash and gore of modern horror films where there is no hero, only a supernatural villain? It is mystifying to me — I think more gun control laws would be like using a band-aid to cure cancer. It doesn’t really address the problem — We need a paradigm shift.

For a comparison, take a look at the number of deaths from alcohol and alcohol related traffic deaths. No one mentions prohibition though.
