Pondering the Church Calendar

Pondering the Church Calendar 2015-03-13T22:15:06-05:00

Every year about this time, which means just before Advent begins, churches and church leaders ponder the church calendar. I got a calendar in the mail recently that begins the year on Dec 1 (not Jan 1), and it’s an attempt to reshape our minds and lives around a new kind of calendar — actually, an old calendar, the church calendar.

Chaplain Mike at Internet Monk recently had a post that gives five reasons to think about the church calendar as formative:

So see Chaplain Mike’s post on the church calendar:

Last Sunday I gave five primary reasons why I think it advantageous for Christians to form their spiritual lives — their walk with God through Christ — around the liturgical year.

  1. It enables us to live in God’s story.
  2. It keeps the main thing the main thing.
  3. It recognizes that one’s calendar forms one’s life.
  4. It links personal spirituality with worship, family, and community.
  5. It provides a basis of unity and common experience for Christians everywhere

What about your reasons for or against the church calendar?
