On Monday I will offer a challenge to the Emerging Movement, a challenge that will also be for all Christians. Also, I will begin a series on the Summons to the Kingdom we call the Sermon on the Mount. We are now planning a “mega-blog” series with some pastors on Eugene Peterson’s Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places. And I am now thinking toward a series on homosexuality. Read more

Kris and I are in Seattle this weekend for the launch of Embracing Grace: A gospel for all of us. We had never been here until last Spring, and loved it so much, we wanted a day to wander around when we scheduled the launch here. I should say “slosh around in the rain.” The humor about how much it rains here, and all the banter back by the natives that it only rains when others are visiting, is probably... Read more

I am a friend of Wayne Grudem (and Stan Gundry), but I find the recent radio interview in which Wayne Grudem sallied forth against the TNIV to be indiscriminately unfair and would like to throw my hat in with Stan Gundry’s response. See this link. (I apologize to Stan for slipping on this, for when I posted this at 2am my time, I had “Bob” Gundry, Stan’s brother. Sorry.) In my previous posts on translation theory (see categories), I discussed... Read more

The first three promised posts on the Emerging Movement, on Praxis, Protest, and Postmodernity, evoke a final post on the positives. There has been some justifiable criticism of the Emerging Movement for its constant criticism, though I think from the beginning the criticism has been matched (and sometimes outdone by) creative resolutions. So, today I want to focus on what the Emerging Movement is for. Let me count the ways. |inline Read more

Brad Bergfalk and I are both tiring with the prose of James Houston, and one of us thinks the book better than the other. But, here is our fifth part (on chp 6). Summary (Brad Bergfalk) After reviewing the meaning of personhood in the three false categories of mentoring (heroic, stoic, and therapeutic), Houston embarks on a discussion of the meaning of personhood in the context of Christian discipleship. The problem that one encounters when speaking about “the Christian person”... Read more

Embracing Grace, I am happy to say, is now out and you should be seeing it in your local bookstores. I have had my copies about two weeks, and it takes about that long to get to the warehouses and into stores and onto shelves. A good price can be had from Covenant Bookstore on our campus. Read more

This series on “What is the Emerging Church?” is designed to help the many who are constantly asking about the identity and definition of the movement or conversation. But, let me be a bit cranky first: Emergent Village has a clear “Order” posted and there is no reason anyone can’t consult it for definition; Wikipedia has a definition, and it too can easily be consulted; and nearly every leader of the Emerging Movement has something along this line. So, let... Read more

I’ve been asked what I think of the White Sox winning the last series of games this year. My comment: why is Kerry Doyal living for last year’s results? That season is over and gone. It is time to focus on the next season, and I think it will be the Cubs’ year! Read more

Thanks to all who visited the old blogsite and “flagged” it — it is now blank. What do I do next? Read more

Whatever the Emerging Movement is, it is clearly a protest movement. Sometimes it can appear to be cranky, but there is substance and there is focus in what the Emerging Movement is protesting. And, though sometimes the resolutions fall flat or fail to materialize or collapse into the unworkable, there are genuine resolutions being worked out. What is the Emerging Movement protesting? Let me count the ways. |inline Read more
