That’s the witness of the life of St. Dominic, whose feast Catholics celebrated yesterday. Reflecting on Dominic, B16 advises: Dear friends, St. Dominic reminds us that prayer, that personal contact with God, is at the heart and origin of the witness of faith that every Christian must give within family life, at work, in social commitments, and even in times of relaxation. Only this real relationship with God gives us the strength to live each event intensely, especially the most... Read more

In her book, My Peace I Give You, Dawn Eden writes about questions she’s encountered in her life, confronting the memories of abuse: “How … do I take the first step? How do I find strength when all I have to work with is weakness?” I asked her about her answer: I found the answer in prayer, reading sacred scripture, and discovering saints to emulate. Others have had to do face a lot more; from office of readings today: From a letter by Saint Cyprian, bishop and martyr (Epist 80; CSEL, 3, 839-840) We know that the soldiers of Christ are not slain but crowned I did not write to your community at once, dearest brother, because all the clergy, exposed as they are to the imminent danger of being put to the test and prepared in a spirit of dedication for the divine glory... Read more

In her new book, My Peace I Give You: Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints, Dawn Eden writes about St. Josephine Bakhita. More from my extended exchange with Eden about the book: More people should know about St. Josephine Bakhita for all sorts of reasons, shouldn’t we? Yes, we should. I learned about Bakhita’s life through Pope Benedict’s encyclical on hope, Spe salvi, and I am very thankful that I featured her in chapter 1 of My... Read more

In continuing conversation with Dawn Eden about her book, My Peace I Give You, I take note of a line in her book “What I truly needed was not to rile my body, but to quiet my soul.” And ask: However does anyone do that? You’re referring to a passage in chapter 4, where I talk about how, before I found healing in Christ, I tried to cope with the effects of my childhood abuse in ways that were self-destructive.... Read more
