Will We Have “Work” to Do in Heaven?

Will We Have “Work” to Do in Heaven? November 12, 2014

When I was young, I had an esoteric view of heaven
as a place where you sat around all day on a cloud, smiling and looking down at the earth below.  “Pretty boring,” I thought.

So I have a question for you:

Will we have work to do in heaven?

Oh, I know that heaven is a place of “eternal rest.”  And for sure, there are some sorts of jobs we will leave behind.

In heaven, we will not:

  • groan when the alarm goes off at 6:20 a.m.
  • dread the day ahead, when the boss will be crabby and the workload will keep us away from our families, those we care about the most.
  • ache from the physical exertion of our labors.
  • hold our tired heads in our hands, begging for closing time to come.

But while there will be none of the unpleasantness that’s sometimes associated with the working life, isn’t there room for “work” in the sense of exercising your creative abilities?

I mean, humans are thinking beings.  We derive great personal satisfaction from learning something new, from finding a solution to a problem or answering a question.

Sure, we’ll bask in the glory of God; and we’ll enjoy reuniting with our loved ones, and with those who have gone before.  But with a billion years plus eternity to complete a project, don’t you think God could give you something to do, just to keep you happy and give you the gift of wonder?

What do you think?
