As I have revealed on my blog, I have always been an independent voter who always voted for a Republican president until Barak Obama. And I have never been that political until recently. And I have believed that, generally, politics should be left outside the door when Christians go to church. That is, getting very political in their meetings can be divisive among Christians, who should be focused on God and Jesus.
But as Republican Donald Trump’s presidency proceeded through its four-year term, on this blog I became more and more critical of his performance and occasionally of the Republican Party. For example, concerning the latter, on April 23, 2019, I posted, “The Republican Party’s Reputation Is Shot to Hell.” And on October 4, 2019, I posted, “Republicans–Three Strikes and You’re Out.” And four months after Trump vacated the White House, I posted on May 28, 2021, “The Republican Party Is as Phony as a Three Dollar Bill.”
Today, I believe the Republican Party more than confirmed the truth of those previous opinions. It issued a scathing denunciation of two Republican members of the House, Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the daughter of former Vice-President Dick Cheney, and Adam Kinzinger of Michigan, for their participation on the Special Committee investigating the Capitol riot on January 6th, 2021. Only a few days after that incident, the House impeached former President Donald Trump for fomenting that “insurrection” that morning with a speech he delivered near the Capitol; but the Senate acquitted him days later.
Of course, there are still a few Republican members of Congress who have a spine to stand up against Donald Trump, who still controls the Republican Party. For example, Senator Mitt Romney of Utah said today regarding this statement by the Republican Party, “Shame falls on a party that would censure persons of conscience, who seek truth in the face of vitriol. Honor attaches to Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for seeking truth even when doing so comes at great personal cost.”
This week, some of the members of the Committee said that the Committee has interviewed over 700 witnesses and that it is still examining documents and electronic messages from the Trump administration. They further announced the Committee will hold televised, public hearings beginning in late March or early April of this year.
I think these hearings will be a lot like the televised Watergate hearings that I watched in mid-1973 which led to Republican President Richard Nixon’s downfall and resignation. And all that Nixon was convicted of was that he lied to the American people about a stupid break-in of five Republican aides into Democratic offices at The Watergate. Trump has perhaps done a hundred times worse!
Today’s Republican Party statement characterized the Committee’s investigation of that Capitol riot most appallingly as the “persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse.” Yet that illegal storming of the Capitol building endangered the lives of all 500+ members of Congress who were there conducting the ceremonial process of declaring Joe Biden as winner of the presidential election. And the riot resulted in five deaths, over 700 arrests so far, and dozens of those arrested already being sentenced by a court and incarcerated in prison.
IMO, the majority of the Congressional members of the Republican Party no longer believe in our nation’s democracy, backed by its Constitution, and in this nation’s rule of law. What is your opinion on this matter that is dividing our nation like nothing else since the Civil War?
