Europe Is Trouncing the USA in the Ryder Cup

The Europe Team and the USA Team are now teeing off on this third and last day of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black on Long Island, New York. Today, it is only twelve singles matches. The Europe Team has an insurmountable lead with the matches standing of 7 points with Europe having 11.5 points and the U.S. only 4.5. Europe only needs 2.5 points to win the trophy. They are off to a blazing start today as well, leading in three of the first six matches with the other three tied.

Why Is the USA Losing So Badly?

This is the first book ever published about the flourishing Christian movement on the PGA Tour, now in its 60th anniversary. It centers on the early history of the PGA Tour Bible Study that now retired Tour player Kermit Zarley and others founded in 1965. He tells many interesting, and often humorous, stories about his fellow PGA Tour pros. But the main thrust of the book is about how this fellowship has impacted the lives of its members and had a positive influence on golf in general. There will be much second guessing about why the USA Team has faired so miserably in these matches this year. Since about 1990, I think I read that Europe has won about 8 times and the U.S. about 3 times. Yet before the 1980s, the U.S. was dominant.

One big surprise is the poor performance from the best player in the world, the USA’s Scottie Scheffler. He and Ireland’s Rory McIlroy—arguable the second best player in the world who just won a career grand slam this year by winning the Master—are paired against each other in the feature match of the day.

As I’ve blogged several times about Scottie Scheffler being a regular member of the PGA Tour Bible Study, which Yours Truly cofounded 60 years ago. See my new book about it entitled Christ on the PGA Tour (1965-1982).

And see my post Thursday, on the eve of these matches, that has a chapter from this book about Samuel Ryder Jr., a beloved Christian and the founder of the Ryder Cup.
