Harris English–the PGA Tour pro with the golf swing that makes him look like what the song says, Smooth Operator–won the Sentry Tournament of Champions today in Kapalua, Hawaii after a seven-year drought from the winners circle. He made a six-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Mexico’s Joaquin Niemann, who had come from behind with a nine-under par 64 on quite a windy day. It was English’s third PGA Tour win.
Ordinarily, English would not have qualified for this elite tournament that started out the year, since it has always consisted of what its name infers, PGA Tour players who won a tournament the previous year. But because of the shortened Tour schedule last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the field for this tournament was expanded this year. English made it into the tournament because he done just about everything else last for success except win. As he said during an interview after the tournament, “Its awesome to get some validation.”
