Monday last week, the FBI was supported by a federal subpoena when it searched Donald Trump’s premises at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and removed several boxes of what have been reported to include secret, government documents that the ex-president was unauthorized to have and take when he departed the White House. It is being further reported that these docs may contain sensitive information about nuclear weapons, whether those of the U.S., or other nations, or both.
The Department of Justice had been in serious communication with Trump about this matter dating back to as early as February this year. Upon the DOJ’s request, Trump had released several boxes of docs to the DOJ through the FBI. But the DOJ later alleged that Trump still had more secret documents that he needed to turn over. But Trump refused. The DOJ then obtained a federal subpoena, thus granted by a federal judge, alleging Trump’s resistance could harm U.S. national security.
A Trump attorney then claimed there were no longer any such documents being held at Mar-a-Lago, which had turned about to be false.
Why former President Donald Trump would take such documents, which clearly is a crime, and then resist giving them back to federal authorities, is most suspicious. When I learned about all of this, I began to suspect that Trump may have taken these documents illegally as “leverage” in case he could go to prison.
Now it turns out that in a CNN interview Tuesday, Donald Trump’s ex-personal lawyer said he thinks his ex-boss took these secret, government documents as a “get out of jail free card” if he is successfully prosecuted by federal or state governments for crimes. Trump is under investigation by at least four governments, and all of them increasingly appear that Trump could be so prosecuted.
Cohen, you may remember, was Trump’s “personal attorney” and unethical enforcer who had said he would “take a bullet” for Trump, indicating his strong devotion to the man. Cohen then flipped on Trump yet involuntarily suffered a fall for him by going to prison three years, though most of it was house arrest.]
Newsweek reported that Cohen further explained in his CNN interview Tuesday concerning Trump and government authorities, “The second they would put him in handcuffs, he would turn around and say, I have the documentation showing, for example, where our nuclear launch pads are. This is what I believe: He would use it and say, if you proceed with this, I’m telling you right now there are 20 of my loyal supporters, you don’t know who they are, but we will release that information to Russia, to Iran, whoever it might be.” Cohen added that Trump “doesn’t care about this country.”
