I am a HUGE fan of the work of Father Thomas M. Rosica, CSB who is the Chief Executive Officer and (in my mind) heart and soul of Salt + Light Television. Not only is Father Rosica a gifted and tireless communicator for the Church and a brilliant man, my experience of his is that he is reasonable, balanced and very fair in his conveyance of news and information. That’s why I will be tuning in heavily to Salt + Light’s coverage... Read more

To celebrate St. Therese today, take a “virtual pilgrimage” to the Carmel of Lisieux. From the e-newsletter of Maureen O’Riordan: The Carmelites of Lisieux and the Association of the Friends of St. Therese and of her Carmel have produced in English, on the Carmel’s community Web site, half a dozen short films (two to four minutes each) which, taken together, constitute a “virtual pilgrimage” to the Carmel.  Enter the monastery with Therese; pray in the choir with the nuns; visit... Read more

In advance of his feast day and in celebration of the awesome new book When Saint Francis Saved the Church by popular historian Jon Sweeney, Ave Maria Press has a totally cool interactive “all things Francis” quiz online this week. I won’t tell you my score, but suffice it to say that I need to read the book! Check it out here! Read more

I’m extraordinarily blessed to receive many awesome books for review. One particularly fantastic one arrived recently: The American Catholic Almanac: A Daily Reader of Patriots, Saints, Rogues, and Ordinary People Who Changed the United States. After only a few weeks with this book, I know it’s not going to be one of those “read it and file it on the bookcase” types of books. My copy of the Almanac has already made it’s way into my daily prayer time rotation of books. By... Read more

Yes, it’s Monday and I’m just getting around to compiling our Sweet Tweets. Go ahead and call me a slacker… A week ago, we left home in a rented vehicle loaded to the gills with boxes and musical instruments and drove North. The college Sophomore was delivered to his off campus apartment. The boxed furniture from Walmart was assembled. Mom tried to avoid being to bossy about where to put what. The goodbyes were said – Dad said goodbye. Mom... Read more

The Song is not a simple movie, but I believe it is a profound one, and an incredibly important one. As I sat watching a screener on a recent summer evening, I paused my version more than once to let portions of the dialogue sink in. Frankly, I also needed to get up and grab tissue. Let’s look for a moment at the setup: Movie Aspiring singer—‐songwriter Jed King is struggling to catch a break and escape the long shadow... Read more

I have been offline a lot the past few days. Frankly, I’ve been unplugged in general as we move my youngest back in at college. In a way, there is tremendous comfort in doing things like unpacking boxes of books and laundering musty comforters. I’m normally not super awesome at doing “mom stuff” like this. Truthfully, I’d typically trade domestic chores for blogging any day. But the few times that I peeked my head up in since Saturday have left... Read more

Doesn’t it seem like this week flew by? When John sent me these week’s STs, he remarked that it was a fast week. I feel the same way. My past few days have been a blur of commitments, both personal and professional, as we prepare to venture up to Oregon on Sunday to take our son back to college. Yesterday, I paused the craziness long enough to get myself to daily Mass and had a wonderful coffee date with a... Read more

Today at the USCCB blog, it’s awesome to see an editorial by Bishop John C. Wester of Salt Lake City arguing against the FCC’s proposed “two tier” system for the Internet: The Federal Communication Commission’s recent interest in creating a “two-tiered” Internet will impair for many Americans this basic need – fast, reliable access to all Internet content. Instead of adopting rules that permit the wealthiest companies to purchase the best service, theFCC should insist on fair treatment for everyone... Read more
