If you’re online this morning (and yes, it’s still morning in California), you may have heard the news that our fellow blogger and social media evangelist Thomas Peters is in critical condition following a tragic swimming accident (Elizabeth has details here).  I hope you’ll join me in praying for his total healing, as well as for his family — including his lovely new bride — who are surely devastated by this turn of events. I was thinking this morning while... Read more

For the past two years, I have been working in partnership with Catholic Relief Services to use my platform at CatholicMom.com to support the good work being done around the world by CRS. For those who are not familiar with CRS, here is an overview of their services: Catholic Relief Services was founded in 1943 by the Catholic Bishops of the United States to serve World War II survivors in Europe. Since then, we have expanded in size to reach... Read more

Warning: I haven’t seen The Conjuring yet. So this is not a post where I’m telling you to go see it. I’ve seen the trailer, and it alone is scary enough to have me sleeping with the lights on. Here’s a write up from IMDB: Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case... Read more

For some reason, my parish is a few weeks behind on the annual “Peter’s Pence” collection. We had the envelopes in this pews this weekend and will take up the collection to aid the Pope’s efforts next week. Per the USCCB website: The purpose of the Peter’s Pence Collection is to provide the Holy Father with the financial means to respond to those who are suffering as a result of war, oppression, natural disaster, and disease.  As I sat looking... Read more

I don’t have much time to write this morning as I sit in my “Westin Hotel heavenly bed” with my little sister reading in the bed next to me. We’re having a “girls weekend”. The occasion: our high school’s band reunion. The event is a multi-class soirée, bringing together bandos, flag girls (like Erin and I) and drill team members from many class years. We’re excited to see a few of our good friends, but I’ll admit to always being... Read more

Has your week gone by as quickly as mine has? I can’t believe how busy it was, which is why I’m so grateful to a special thanks to my good friend John Clem, the Director and Media Minister at Catholic Web Services (http://catholicws.com/) for compiling the follow list of “not to be missed” stories from this past week (July 6 – July 12): Papal Tweet:  “If we wish to follow Christ closely, we cannot choose an easy, quiet life. It will be a demanding... Read more

Here’s a little confession: I have a “sleep ritual” that helps me to cope with the crazy life I lead. I’m married to an ER doctor who comes home at weird hours of the night and turns on Sports Center. I parent a teen who seems to sleep during the 3 am to 11 am shift. I’m a menopausal woman with hot flashes (I know, TMI). And I tend to “sleep around” — finding myself in a hotel room bed... Read more

I’m likely late to the party in writing about Man of Steel, but since I’ve been on the road so much lately I just saw the film this week. The PG-13 rated film ranks an AIII (for adults) from Catholic News Service and a less-than-glowing review from Fr. Robert Barron. My take: I sort of loved it… Sort of… I could have done without a few of the extended scenes of general mayhem that exhibited themselves a few times in the... Read more

I’m in the regular habit of watching the daily gospel reflection videos from the USCCB as a part of my morning prayer time. So many days, these simple two minute ponderings truly bring the gospel to life for me. Such is always the case on Tuesdays, when I hear from one of my favorite preachers, Fr. Greg Friedman, O.F.M. Fr. Greg likely has no idea how often I listen to his words and say, “Yes!” I’ve had the sincere pleasure of... Read more

I’d intended to return from my weekend away and offline with some type of mind-bending post on Lumen Fidei, or a at the very least a recap of the incredible things I learned from the various kilt-wearing-Guinness-chugging reenactors I met this this weekend at the Scottish Highland Games in Monterey. But then I returned home after my road trip and discovered a downstairs full of demons: ants! Our weekend family road trip bliss was destroyed by the colony that had... Read more
