At least ten times a day, I type some version of the words, “I will pray for you”. I’ve been asking myself recently if I really mean those words when I say/type them. In an age where we are increasingly overwhelmed by so many messages, so much information, and so many demands upon our time, is it truly possible to create a community of prayerful support online? In my heart, when I stop to ponder the question without pausing to... Read more

California parents know the famous “Fourth Grade Mission Project” as a rite of passage in our schools — not only Catholic schoolchildren but their public school counterparts participate in this assignment to study and build a model of one of the state’s twenty-one missions. My own son Adam’s fourth grade model of Mission San Buenaventure still resides in my bedroom – Adam and his dad toiled over it for several nights and it was acclaimed for being the first-ever mission... Read more

First, just fyi I’m planning a big LA Congress roundup post later today with tons of photos, so stay tuned. In the mean time, I’m busy digging out of my email inbox, where I found this little gem that just must be shared. His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, the sixth and current Archbishop of Washington, caught on the street by those goofs at TMZ. I don’t watch that show, but the fact that a mainstream media gossip show would be... Read more

Go ahead, get your snarky comments about liturgical dance ready — while you’re doing that, I’ll be preparing to celebrate the Eucharist with 40,000 enthusiastic, devout, and motivated Catholics who have flocked to Anaheim to be a part of this year’s Religious Education Congress. Since I’m blessed to be giving three talks this year, I haven’t given a good look to the program booklet, but I do know that I’m honored to be speaking among such amazing souls as Fr.... Read more

From yesterday’s New York Times (excerpted): Church law states that cardinals should wait 15 days after the papacy becomes vacant before starting a conclave so that the cardinals eligible to vote have enough time to travel to Rome. That timing also took into account a papal funeral. But because Benedict announced on Feb. 11 that he would step down on Feb. 28, many cardinals have already begun traveling to Rome, where they will attend Benedict’s last public audience as pope next Wednesday... Read more

Today it was a very special day. We filmed the first episode of my new television program on our local Catholic station, KNXT! Our guests: Bishop Ochoa Of my home diocese of Fresno, and Richard Sexton, Our superintendent of schools. We have a few kinks to work out, but I had a terrific time with my cohost Kim Cochran. Who knew how much effort it takes to put together 30 minutes of television?! I will be sure to share our... Read more

In trolling the CNN site tonight, I came across this video gem: Yes, an entire segment on The Situation Room devoted to the First Lady’s recent decision to cut her bangs. She calls it her, “midlife crisis”. Uh oh. This spells trouble for me — Michelle Obama was born on January 17, 1964, meaning that I was already six months old by the time she arrived on the scene. Do the math in your head and realize that with my... Read more
