Yes… I’ll be getting back to you on that whole Manti issue soon — I actually took a morning away from my desk to take a walk with a friend. Outside, with cold breezes and birds chirping and nothing beeping at me. Imagine that… In the mean time, I have to point you to my fellow Catholic Channel blogger Sam Rocha’s stunning defense of my mom’s position on my new favorite movie, Les Miserables. To catch up on the great... Read more

My head is reeling tonight from a story involving both my alma mater, Notre Dame and my favorite college football player, Manti Te’o. In a nutshell, here is the story as reported by Jack Swarbrick, Vice President and Director of Athletics for the University of Notre Dame: Good evening. Thanks to all of you for joining us on relatively short notice. We’re here tonight, obviously, because of an article that appeared in Dead Spin earlier today and to address the... Read more

Readers who have been paying attention will know that when I snuggle into bed tonight, I will have — God willing — successfully completed Day 15 of my Whole30 challenge. If you have no idea what “Whole30” means, take a look at this site, which spells out all of the details. Since I haven’t personally prepared every morsel of food that has entered my body in the past two weeks, I cannot for a fact guarantee that I have been... Read more

This morning, I had a shocking conversation with my own mother that caused a near collision when I almost ran my car of the road in dismay, confusion and disgust. The source of our debate: the movie version of Les Miserables. (Cue “I Dreamed a Dream” now…). The conversation went something like this (daughterly liberties taken with exact dialogue): Me: What did you do this weekend? Mom: We went to see Les Mis. I hated it. Me: What????!!!!! Mom: Yeah,... Read more

The past few days have been filled with contrast. We are in Eugene, Oregon for a few days, visiting the University of Oregon with our sons Adam (the potential future Duck) and Eric (the current Harvard Junior who’s along for the ride). I must say that I came into this little adventure as a skeptic, unsure about the wisdom of sending our son to such a large public institution. After just a few days enjoying this campus, but especially interacting... Read more

Friends who are tuned into my work in social media will have likely seen the very sad news I announced on January 8th. The 4 year old son of one of our contributors at CatholicMom.com, Cassandra Poppe, was involved in a horrific burn accident. Here is a summary of what happened to little Fulton and his father Jay: You are aware of the tragic events on January 8, 2013, leaving 4 year old Fulton with 2nd and 3rd degree burns... Read more

I have a lot of single friends. Sometimes, I play the “matchmaker” game in my head, shifting their Facebook photos mentally into lines and then pairing them with other, seemingly compatible friends. Since I’m a wimp, I hesitate to go the extra step of actually introducing them to one another. Unlike one of my sisters who I credit with actually arranging a successful marriage via an introduction between two friends, I’m a “fix up failure”. Thank goodness for the good... Read more

Happy Monday morning friends — yes, out here in California it’s officially still morning. I’m calling today the first “real” day of 2013, since for me today marks a return to “real life” with the return of my son Adam to his final semester of high school. As I type this, our college-aged son Eric — still home on Christmas break — slumbers upstairs and husband Greg is back to a regular work schedule. The items I’ve been bumping to... Read more

I was reminded today what a blessing it is to have such a supportive online community of friends. In numerous situations lately, the power of a strong praying community has felt so very tangible in my life. When I begin to doubt my course in life on long, strenuous days, God inevitably graces me with some form of encouragement to remind me what my priorities should be. Often, it happens so quickly and so tangibly that I almost have to... Read more

I thought I would share/divulge some personal information here on the blog so that my readers can send prayers and help me stay accountable – in an effort to get healthy in 2013, I’m kickstarting my year with the Whole9 “Whole30” challenge. Obviously this is not the “Patheos Diet Channel”, but for me there is such a strong connection between my spiritual life and the physical body God has given me that not to make the connection between healthy living... Read more
