This is Part 4 of our interview with Chris Heuertz (his Facebook and Twitter) on his new, vulnerable book, Unexpected Gifts. In case you missed them, check out Part 1 (my overview of the book), Part 2 (the beginning lessons of living with Mother Teresa) and Part 3 (on working with mutilated childhood soldiers in the Sierra Leone civil war). Andrew: Chris, you write about the need for contemplative spirituality as a key to sustaining the strength to do good. What is... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? When you choose Jesus you enter into his fullness no matter the surrounding circumstances. [John 10:1-18] Those with closed hearts will always be confused by the juxtaposition of one’s words and deeds. What they don’t see is how one completes the other. [John 10:19-21] Too many people don’t know how to live in reality and thus, are unable to receive the simplest answers shown directly to them. Instead they accuse, and call you... Read more

January was my first full month blogging on Patheos. I look forward to many, many more exciting months and years to come! This past month there were 47 total posts, including 28 posts from My One Sentence Bible series (which covered the second half of the Book of Luke and beginning of the Book of John). Here are the Top 5 most viewed posts from the month of January: 1. Huge Announcement by Famous UK Pastor Steve Chalke (January 15)... Read more

Today we are continuing the interview with Chris Heuertz (his Facebook and Twitter) on his new, vulnerable book, Unexpected Gifts. In case you missed them, check out both Part 1 (my overview of the book) and Part 2 (the beginning lessons of living with Mother Teresa). Andrew: In this book you tell a powerful story about visiting a refugee in Sierra Leone during the civil war over blood diamonds. The camp hosted thousands of survivors of amputations, mutilations and dismembered... Read more

Yesterday in Part 1 I gave an overview of Chris Heuertz’s (his Facebook and Twitter) new book, Unexpected Gifts. Chris has been kind enough to answer a few questions about some of the key portions (at least in my mind) of his book. Today’s question is about his experience moving to India, having Mother Teresa as a mentor for three years, and starting a home with Mother Teresa for dying children in India. Andrew: I know a number of really... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? People who don’t want to see good being done in the most unique of places keep asking the same trapping questions hoping someone will give in to their “correct” way of thinking. [John 9:1-28] When haters’ opinions are proven wrong their go-to recourse is name calling and blame associations. [John 9:27-34] You are held responsible for how you handle whatever is placed in front of you. [John 9:35-41] Much love. www.themarinfoundation.org Read more

I love Chris Heuertz. I really do. I think he’s not only brilliant, but truly a man of integrity that lives out everything he writes and speaks about. Chris’ previous book, Friendship at the Margins, is one of my favorite books of all time. As a person who reads around 50 or so books a year that is saying something, at least in my mind. So when I got a copy of his new book, Unexpected Gifts: Discovering the Way of... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? In Jesus’ eyes there is an equality of humanity and an equality of sin. [John 8:31-36] Those who do not embrace the journey of Jesus and the mystery of God only have room to cast others out. [John 8:37-47] When people who have an inflated self-assessment get confused, their only rebuttal is to use fear-based tactics to mask their embarrassment.   What is My One Sentence Bible? When haters don’t get their way they accuse everyone around them, even their own people, of being in a conspiracy theory. [John 7:45-52] Religious gatekeepers use vulnerable people in difficult situations to try and theologically trap those following Jesus. Don’t give in; just keep loving. [John 7:53-8:11] There will never be any satisfaction for those who try to use human logic to argue the “incorrectness” of faith. [John 8:12-30] Much love. www.themarinfoundation.org Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? Those who doubt your good work will always try to drag you into a public debate. Don’t give in; keep doing your good work in private until the time is right. [John 7:1-10] No matter how clearly you describe the principles of which you engage your culture, because it’s so different, opposite opinions of you are a dime a dozen. [John 7:11-24] When you actually live in the principles of Jesus people will... Read more
