What is My One Sentence Bible? 8-2-11: There is power, security and strength in unity. Any wonder why Christianity and its hundreds of denominations are struggling so much today? Luke 11:17-18a Just because you’re skeptic doesn’t mean that the reality you see in front of you is any less real. Luke 11:18b Who do you believe? The words of outside critics or the words of the one you see doing the actual work? Luke 11:19-20 Much love. www.themarinfoundation.org Read more

I’m flying to Dallas today to teach two classes until August 8th at the Salvation Army South Region Territorial Youth Institute. One of the five day classes is on Bridge Building, the other five day class is on How to Study the Bible. Last year I spent a week with them teaching and it was one of the most transformational things I’ve ever had the privilege to do. The youth that the Salvation Army bring to this event are no... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? 8-1-11: The pureness of God’s love and generosity is beyond even that of parents’ natural wish to provide health and contentment for their children.  Luke 11:11-13 Even when a miracle happens in front of people’s eyes the purposeful accusations won’t stop. Luke 11:14-15 Sometimes what just happened in front of you is indeed a sign from heaven. As you keep asking for more signs, tell me, what is the ample number of signs you... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? 7-31-11: Summary of the work of a Christian life: Revere the Lord, work to establish God’s kingdom in the here and now, trust in God’s provisions for you, forgive as you have been forgiven, and always turn to the Lord for protection. Luke 11:2-4 There are times when persistence in and of itself is showing faithfulness. Luke 11:5-8 Doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve done or what other “Christians” say about you, the... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? 7-30-11: Is wisdom the intellectual drive to question or is it having a simple faith that knows only of belief? Luke 10:21 When you push Jesus for further answers to justify yourself, beware of the reply. You are then held responsible. Luke 10:25-37 Always be alert of what you must prioritize—the things that have eternal value even over and above what you feel you should do at that moment. Tomorrow morning, Saturday July 30th, Randy Roberts Potts, openly gay grandson of televangelist Oral Roberts, will be sharing his story at the 2011 Inclusion Conference in Chicago; and be on a panel discussion on sexuality and the Bible afterwards. This should be really interesting, as personally, I have quite a few connections to Oral Roberts and his university. My Mom graduated from undergrad there, one of my really good friends – who is gay – was the student body president while he attended... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? 7-29-11: There is a difference between kingdom establishment and proselytizing. Luke 10:9 When you offer peaceful hospitality and it is not returned in kind, know they are in the Lord’s hands and judgment. Luke 10:10-16 Authority is not about power but of humble remembrance of who allowed you that authority in the first place. Luke 10:20 Much love. www.themarinfoundation.org Read more

I don’t get how the US government can’t stay within a budget without grossly exceeding it every year. When regular businesses spend all their money and can’t pay, they get shut down (unless you’re a huge bank with lots of ties to the White House, but that’s another thing I don’t understand that frustrates me to no end). When regular people spend all of their money and can’t pay their bills they get evicted or foreclosed and end up on... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? 7-28-11: Too many who believe in Jesus lack the will to actually follow Jesus because by all cultural standards the sacrifice is too great. Luke 9:57-62 There needs to be people in advance to prepare the way for the potential of a message to resonate. Luke 10:1-3 Humble hospitality is a measure of Jesus. I saw on the news the other day that on the first day of LGBT couples having the right to get legally married in New York, the New York City Clerks Office (NYCCO) reported that a record 659 marriage licenses were picked up. The NYCCO, and the news outlet, didn’t explain what “record” meant, so I’m not sure what metric they were using to describe such a number being a record. What I do know is that 659 seems kind... Read more
