is trying to get a bead on young Catholic intellectuals.
Unfortunately, “intellectual” is a term that is (understandably) tainted due to the tendency of our Chattering Classes to so easily affix it to themselves and deny it to anybody they dislike. Also, the tendency of clever people to worship, rather than use, the intellect is a problem, not to mention the real and deeply evil corruption of the intellect by truly educated people who deliberately and wilfully turn their great intellectual gifts to the service of evil by concocting ingenious justifications for monstrous wickedness or pervert the life of the mind into the defense of nihilism and the meaninglessness of life. And finally, the growing movement of shouting angry conspiracy theory populism tends to draw on a long American tradition of hostility to them damn pointy headed intellectuals with all their fancy book learnin’ and substitute a sort of faux intellectual “tradition” which consists of “connecting” Mercury dimes, fasces, Woodrow Wilson, Rockefeller Plaza, Progressives, and so forth and then calling this “intellectual analysis”.
God help the young person trying to make sense of the world without the assistance of some serious formation in the Catholic intellectual tradition.
