Tobit and two other relatives’ names derive from the Hebrew “tov” which means “good” and the book is meant to demonstrate how a good person behaves.

Tobit is my favorite book of the OT. It’s an enchanting parable of how personal and loving God’s providence is. Its Arabian Nights setting and tone make it all the more appealing. BTW, another such parable is the book of Jonah, although Jonah was probably a real person.

I love Tobit. In some ways, it was the first sitcom. My favorite part is when the Reguel is very nice to his new son-in-law, weds him to his daughter, then sends them off, all politeness. As soon as they are gone, he calls the servants to dig the grave so they can bury the young man before the neighbors find out.

It’s a very Mel Brooks moment.
