A reader writes:
I’m no fan of Alan Keyes or Randall Terry. And, having had some small experience with Father Weslin — he lives in these parts, and I’ve met the man — I think it is safe to say that “his zeal consumes him.”
Still, all three of these men, in this case, are on the side of the angels. Notre Dame and Father Jenkins . . . not so much.
Whether these protesters were *seeking* to be arrested or not is immaterial. Why would Notre Dame seek to arrest fairly restrained, prayerful and peaceful protesters who were advocating a cause Notre Dame purports to support?
As with President Obama, don’t listen to what Father Jenkins and the university board say, watch what they *do*. What they do is keep throwing the Catholic side of Jenkins’ cherished “free exchange of ideas” in jail, in effect allowing Obama to come to an allegedly Catholic institution and engage in a pro-abortion monologue.
Furthermore, by arresting Terry, Keyes and Father Weslin, Notre Dame thus ensured that all the media focus would be upon the most strident (and thus the least palatable — and persuasive — to the general public) pro-life voices. Father Jenkins and his ilk have helped a politician intractably opposed to the Catholic position on a “culture of life” issue look “reasonable,” while ensuring the church looks “unreasonable.”
Not a lot to add. That’s about the size of it.
