At the end of the Civil War, Father Isaac Hecker, founder of the Paulists, fulfilled his dream of launching a national Catholic magazine, The Catholic World. The first issue appeared in May, and it ran continuously for 131 years until 1996. It was a pretty bold step at a time when many Catholic journals were opening and folding rapidly. But most of them were independently funded, and those having the backing of a religious community, as was the case with the Catholic World, made it. Hecker was able to get some of the best writers in the English-speaking Catholic world for the journal. The University of Michigan has made the journal available online for the years 1865 to 1901, and you can it read by clicking here.
