The Catholic Church, so often noted for its sleepy and hoary antiquity, has again and again been in the very vanguard of an advancing and changing world; and it is part of the joke that she always suffered for it at the next change. She has filled the world with too many masterpieces when they were in the fashion; so there are too many of them to be pointed at as old-fashioned.
