The Mormon Therapist
Do you know where I can find an LDS therapist besides LDS Family Services?
There is a site called ldscounselors.net where you will find LDS counselors and therapists listed. It is important to understand that the therapists/counselors on this site have paid to be on it – in other words, not ALL Mormon counselors or therapists are represented. This site is associated with the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists. (AMCAP) Like any association, professionals must pay yearly dues to belong and this process can get expensive. Most professionals I know choose to belong to only one or two associations. For example I choose to belong to AAMFT (American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy) because that is the training I am founded in.
LDS Family Services is also a venue to find LDS therapists/counselors in your area that don’t necessarily work FOR the agency, as are your bishop or stake president. Maybe not all LDS therapists choose to do this, but when I moved into the area I currently live in I let the local leadership know that my services were available. And in areas where there may not be any LDS therapists available, the bishop may have a contact of someone who he’s worked well with regarding other cases and who respects our LDS values.
