Some things that can get in the way of orgasm:
- Side effects from certain medications. Discuss any concerns with your doctor.
- Stress- Ironically orgasm can be a great stress reducer, but if our mind is wandering from things we are stressed about it can be difficult to be in the zone necessary for orgasmic release.
- Body image/self-esteem issues- Worrying about how we look or engaging in self-hate types of thoughts will impede our ability to let go and enjoy.
- Two well documented mental health disorders that affect orgasm are depression and post- traumatic stress disorder.
- Performance anxiety
- Being in a “rut” – Changing the love making routine can be beneficial when this is the case.
- Sex negative feelings that can come from religion, family, the media, friends, etc. Reframing can be a useful tool in these situations (i.e. what are my non healthy views or perceptions and how can I rework them so that they can be deemed healthy).
All of these speak in some way or another to our state of mind. The good thing about this is that the mind is a fascinating and malleable instrument quite capable of readjusting towards the benefits of health. Through counseling, self-help books, meditation/prayer, exercise and a variety of other self care techniques, many of these issues can be dealt with effectively.
