I would be interested to know why I feel compelled to cut or hurt my arms. I have heard of people cutting their legs or stomach, but I only have compulsions to cut my arms. Is there anything behind which body part?
Also, is cutting different than wanting to die or commit suicide?
Yes, cutting and other types of self-injury behavior (i.e. burning, scratching, hair pulling, etc.) is different than suicidal ideation. Self-injury falls under, believe it or not, the category of a “soothing” coping mechanism. It is usually a reaction to stress/anxiety or trauma mixed with poor coping skills. It offers a sense of control, a sense of calm, a sense of escape or even a sense that one can still feel. This does not mean that some self-injury doesn’t become fatal, even if suicide is not the intention. There is also a statistic that 40-60% of people who commit suicide show signs of having had issues with cutting.
I’ve never heard of any research addressing issues related to why people choose to cut one part of the body over another. I’m not sure it entirely matters. I know some choose to cut on several parts of their bodies, while others are more ritualistic and choose a repetitive site. Usually, cutters will choose sites that can be more easily hidden from potential observers since they are embarrassed about their behavior and can feel guilt/shame.
I would encourage you to reach out and get professional help for your situation. A trained therapist can help assess for issues such as depression, anxiety, etc. and can also help you develop healthier coping mechanisms that can greatly improve your quality of life. Please feel free to ask any further questions on this venue. I am also available for consultation if you would be interested.
