Did not go as planned. Surprised? Not really. The posse and I met with good friends for lunch at the park and next thing you know, it was 4 hours later. That’s what happens when I’ve not seen my GF in 6 months! We made our way back to the house where all the children continued to play…and we still were yakkiing away. Khaled suggested they all stay for dinner – which was A W E S O M E! Okay, I admit, I never think of doing things like that spur of the moment. I’m more of a planner. I think, and orchestrate…and plan, and work myself up, and then clean like a fanatic. Then I’m dead by the time the guests arrive. I really need to work on that. Thank goodness for my husband.
Anyhow, the point of all of this is that we were planning to have Ta’amaia for dinner last night. The mix was made and in the fridge waiting for us to cook it (us – meaning my husband because the deep oil over flame always scares me a little, I always end up being burned!) So, he adds the eggs..and takes it out to the oil. Forms the little spheres of delicious Ta’amaia…and drops them in. And then he waits the appropriate time…takes them out and asks me to taste them. Just to be sure. This is the point where things went sideways. The texture was wrong…there wasn’t enough cilantro…I dunno. This is not something I grew up eating. In fact, I never had Ta’amaia until I was in college, and not really good addicting Ta’amaia until the first time at my MIL’s house. So, I’m really the sous chef in this venture. We give up and go for the standby: Burgers, fries and onion rings.
AH HAH! Things I KNOW how to cook! LOLOL Seriously, we’ve made these things so many times we could do them blind folded. But you know, nothing is ever easy…just as I’m about to make the batter for the onion rings, I freeze and forget what I’m supposed to put in the mix. My good friend is across the island laughing. I consult the cookbook, where I cannot find my cheat sheet, and then resort to whinging it. In the end, it was all good. The little posse and friends ate until they were stuffed, and the parents sat around the table enjoying the night air and laughing theirselves silly.
Khaled said we should just give up and order takeout Ta’amaia when we get the craving. I know him though, he won’t stop until it is perfected. We will have a lesson via skype with Naena this weekend, I think.
It was a good night. Good Friends, Good Food, Good Family! Salam.
