The cover design for my upcoming book The Bible Tells Me So: Why Defending Scripture Has Made Us Unable to Read It was just finalized, and I hope you REALLY like yellow. A while back I posted briefly on the book (here), and I will blog a bit more as we get closer to the release date (late August/early September). The basic idea is When we let the Bible be the Bible rather than what we expect it ought to be–or need it... Read more

Over at The Tentative Apologist, Randal Rauser posted a podcast interview with me that, frankly, I forgot I did. But then I remembered. Actually, it’s the second part of an interview we did last November at the annual Bible scholar nerd fest (Society of Biblical Literature) in Baltimore. You can listen to part 1 here, the topic of which was evolution. This podcast is about inerrancy, and follows on the panel discussion at the Evangelical Theological Society earlier that week... Read more

Over at OnFaith, Brandon Withrow has published an article on the growing rift emerging among evangelicals on how to handle the biblical depictions of God as violent. I was interviewed for the piece, along with several others. Early in the article, Withrow observes: Many Christians today are critical of the violence they see in other religions — especially Islam — but there’s an inescapable cognitive dissonance if you are appalled by the violence done in the name of one religion... Read more

After saying in my last post that I would probably wait to see Noah until it comes out on video, I went and saw it anyway because so many people were telling me things like, “Dude, you HAVE to see this movie; it’s epic” etc. So I went with my wife Sue on Saturday. General comment: IMAX is #$%^ expensive. I almost made Sue wait in the car but she insisted on coming along. That being said, I loved the movie. Of course, I would... Read more

I’m sure I’ll see Noah soon enough. Maybe when it comes out on video. I’m sure I’ll like parts of it and not like other parts. And I am absolutely sure it will get the biblical very, very wrong. And I don’t care. Didn’t we just go through all this? I feel I should be getting worked up about other things. I am growing weary of “I strongly disagree with you” being equated with the “Gospel is at stake” culture-war-dive-off-a-cliff... Read more

Most essentially, spirituality is openness to the Spirit….The whole thing is a dance. Your partner is the Spirit, who has already entered the dance floor and is calling for you to come. The Spirit will lead the dance. You only need to follow. Don’t hold back from trying to learn the first dance steps. Just get out onto the floor and trust your partner to teach you everything you need to know and to give you everything you need to... Read more

I’ve left 11 churches in my life. I never bothered counting, but I did this morning as I was thinking about this post. No, I was never kicked out (sorry to disappoint). Some departures were due to moves to and from schools, etc. Other moves were conscious decisions for other reasons. About 10 years ago, my wife and I made the conscious decision to begin attending a local Nazarene church. Our reasons had a lot to do family factors and very little, if anything, to... Read more
